Reclaimed Floorboards

These are floorboards which are sourced from buildings undergoing demolition or renovation and include houses, schools, woolstores and factories. The boards are professionally lifted and packed in batches specific to their building of origin.

Storage and handling of reclaimed timber is as important as that of new timber.

Here are a few Don'ts:

- Don't buy boards which have been water-soaked to facilitate lifting.

- Don't buy boards which are stored outside. Plastic wrap and a carport roof will not protect timber from a high moisture content.

Remilled Recycled Timber

We retail a wide range of remilled hardwoods and softwoods including wideboard flooring, overlay flooring, dressed board, staircase components, furniture pieces and laminated benchtops.

The timber is sourced from construction members such as beams, joists, trusses and purlins. They are purged of metal and resized by planer and bandsaw.

Our floorboards are profiled with a centred tongue to allow choice of face and the timber is professionally graded for re-use.

Recycled structural timber is seasoned by decades of air-drying.  It is stable enough to be used as flooring, but great care must be taken in the storage and handling of this timber.  Age does not give it immunity to changes in (acquired) moisture content.

Kiln Dried Flooring

We sell kiln-dried native hardwoods sourced from State Forests of NSW. These forests of origin have been certified under the Australian Forestry Standard as having been sustainably-managed for their wood supply.

The original intent of State Forests was to supply future timber needs close to established mills and roads as the original forests were logged. This was a good intention. It attempted sustainability in days when these indicators were not diligently mapped. NSW State Forest timber is the next best option for a sustainable supply of high-quality flooring timber that we are able to find. However, we are interested to hear from you if you can find a better supply for us.

Within this option, we stock and supply Natural Feature Grade and Rustic Grade timbers because they were a waste product only 20 years ago when we committed to our waste-revalue agenda. Nowadays, NFG flooring is a legitimate and credible timber product and the feedstock has a higher-value precluding its previous use as a pallet or crate timber.

We still believe the current practice of grading to Select is wasteful and unsustainable in the present supply context, and would like to see the current grading rules changed to eliminate Select grade. Two grades - low to moderate feature, and moderate to high feature, would be a better value return for sawmillers and dispose of the old, mid 20th century notion that bland or featureless is some sort of paradigm for Appearance grade native hardwoods. Boy, do we have some great KD floors for you! Have a look at the images below:

Decking

See our Pricing page for currently available species in decking. The Durability table shown is a guide to suitability of species for outdoor structures. Other considerations that are important are:

  • availability of good length in packs

  • cost / value

  • grade of timber, seasoning, stability and penetration features which may shorten its life or affects its appearance

The species we have chosen are all available in good lengths. This is more important in decking than flooring. Although Class 1 timbers are more durable, many are either too expensive or have too many shorts in packs.
